Trip the Light Fantastic

4 days  ·  Vancouver International Airport → Vancouver International Airport via Yellowknife  ·  Very Easy

Welcome to long, dark nights, a journey over snow and ice to a remote lodge, and home cooked meals. Here, under the band of the auroral oval, is the most intense Northern Lights activity on earth.

Tour Summary

As you climb into our tracked vehicle, your attention turns to a vast expanse of white wilderness that surrounds, where even the slightest sound travels for miles. Your one hour journey, first by van and then by off-road vehicle, travels over snow and five foot thick to our remote lodge. Not all wildlife is in hibernation – keep your eyes peeled for red fox, coyotes and wolves.

The lodge is situated on one of a maze of islands in Great Slave Lake’s 100 mile long North Arm. In this area the Aurora is visible for 250 nights per year, or almost every night from mid December to early April. Here, under crystal-clear skies, the heavens burst into colour with swaths of jade, gold and violet, a glorious dance that changes each night. During your three night stay you have a 98% chance of seeing the northern lights.

All the creature comforts of the north are in the main lodge: home cooked meals, satellite telephone and wireless internet service, a fully licensed lounge and a fireplace. Four guest cabins are equipped with a furnace, electricity and private bathrooms. Winter conditions prevail which means no running water and a one minute walk from the cabins to use Pacto toilets in the lodge. The third and last night is at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife.

During the day, we  provide opportunities for snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding and snowshoeing. Or, you may wish to simply curl up in the lodge with a good book and take in the panoramic view of the lake.  Either way, immersing yourself in this natural phenomenon must be on your bucket list!
