Overview

Welcome to our cultural exploration of remote Haida Gwaii, a name that translates to “Islands of the People.”

Your  trip Leader is David Hopper, Masters in Environmental Studies (MES). Born in England, grew up in Singapore, and immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1967. David’s’ working career began in mineral exploration which took him to remote areas throughout British Columbia. In 1980 he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he started a long career as an environmental planner with provincial departments of natural resources and environment. He contributed to establishing conservation protection to over 12% of the land base of Nova Scotia. Now retired from civil service, David enjoys teaching environmental geography part-time at St Mary’s University and returns to the west coast to guide tours of the Canadian Rockies and Haida Gwaii for Midnight Sun Adventure Travel.

Our small group of five follows David to delve into quaint shops and galleries. Here we meet the Haida artisans and guides we have come to know over the last decade. Haida People including carvers, Watchmen, and interpreters provide an understanding of their traditional way of life and how the Haida have adapted to changing times, including tourism. Experience SG̱ang Gwaay, the village of Skedans (Haida name is Ḵ’uuna), St. Mary’s Spring, Tow Hill, Balance Rock and the site of the Golden Spruce. Immerse yourself in the wild, ocean-swept landscape of Naikoon Provincial Park. Visit with Haida Watchman at remote SG̱ang Gwaay Llnagaay.

As a small group of five we tread lightly on this land, our steps taking us to closer to an immersive experience. Please see our videos showing a traditional pole raising.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Dajiing Giids (formerly known as Queen Charlotte City) : A Taste of Haida Culture

Our travel to Haida Gwaii begins at Vancouver Main Terminal Airport when we board our flight to Sandspit. The 1.5 hour fight skirts the Coastal Mountains, swings north-west over Hecate Strait and then crosses over Gwaii Haanis National Park and Reserve.

At Sandspit Airport, your Midnight Sun Driver/ Guide will load your luggage and then escort the group to Ailford Bay where we take the 20 minute crossing to Skidegate on Graham Island. A stop the Dajiing Giids, formerly known at Queen Charlotte, Visitor Centre will give us “the big picture” and we load up on local maps. From here we’ll check into our bed and breakfast and tour the village of Dajiing Giids and Skidegate.

In the evening we experience a taste of Haida culture and lifestyle by dining in a truly unforgettable way. At Keenwaiis Kitchen our Haida Chef, Roberta Olson who specializes in traditional Haida and local foods, will prepare an authentic three course dinner for our group. From her home, Roberta, whose Haida name is Keenawaii, has served dignitaries, government officials and celebrities. The seafood and venison are locally harvested as are the berries, mushrooms and other wild edibles.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Dinner

Day 2 - Dajiing Giids : Visit Ḵ'uuna (Skedans) & T’aanuu

After an early breakfast, we make our way down to the boat dock for a 15 minute briefing. Here, our 30 foot aluminum catamaran awaits with its heated closed cabin, bathroom and open deck space. Guests are issued gear including rubber boots, toques and floater jackets. Then, off we go to the Haida villages of Ḵ’uuna Llnaagaay (commonly known as Skedans) and T’aanuu Llnagaay for walks through two distinctive village sites. Ḵ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans) was a village of 26 to 30 longhouses at its height.

In this remote corner of the world, we view these ruins as structures that evoke and summon the past to an encounter with contemporary reality. At Ḵ’uuna Llnagaay, guests follow the network of clam shell trails to view the remains of the village. The poles that remain and the depressions of several longhouses give one a sense of the former grandeur of the village, splayed out along Skedans Bay. Along the way, Haida Gwaii guides incorporate storytelling, songs and local history to give guests a glimpse into the heritage of the Haida People and how they protect the land and waters.

After lunch, we board our boat and head to the village of Tanu. The Eagle and Raven Wolf village of T’aanuu Llnagaay translates to Eelgrass Town in reference to the eelgrass beds nearby. This village was once populated between 25 and 40 longhouses. Though no standing poles remain at T’aanuu, the house depressions and moss-covered house posts provide a vivid reminder of the history this place holds.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch

Day 3 - Tlell : Natural and Cultural Monuments

This morning we head to the village of Skidegate and the Haida Culture Centre at Kay Llnagaay. More ambitious passengers may want to walk the six k’s along the coastal road to the Centre.

Here at the Centre, guests will get a guided tour of this award winning Haida Gwaii cultural tourism attraction. The Centre sits on the ancient site of Kay Llnagaay or “Sea Lion Town,” and is designed to resemble the traditional Oceanside Haida Village that once stood in its place. The Centre houses a museum which contains thousands of Haida artifacts including the largest argillite collection in the world. We’ll also see poles, traditional and ceremonial clothing as well as everyday household objects.

At the Performance House stories, drumming and traditional dances are performed. We’ll also visit the carving house/ Gyaa K’id Naay and Tluu Naay Canoe Shed / Skaajang Naay. The large open-walled building of the carving house is designed to hold monumental poles, canoes and any other work that would be too large to fit in the enclosed space of the carving shed. Guests are invited to walk around and tour Haida artists at work in this work space. Currently, the Skidegate Pole carved by legendary Haida artist Bill Reid is housed in the Carving House until it’s ready to be raised again inside the walls of the Haida Gwaii Museum.

At the canoe shed, learn about the Haida mode of travel, transportation, food/resource gathering and trade by exploring the history and importance of canoes in Haida lives.

Haidas were fierce warriors and well-known coastal travellers, having ventured to Victoria for trading purposes in earlier times during the 1800s. Critical to the sustainability of Haida culture was the canoe which the Haida depended on in order to trade with neighbouring coast First Peoples and travel between communities.

Those guests feeling the need to get out and stretch their legs can elect to take a walk around Spirit Lake. This hiking trail is hard packed and well maintained rated easy to moderate with some steep parts at the beginning.

After lunch at the local bistro we’ll head north on the Yellowhead Highway. Along the way, nestled behind a stand of tall cedars, a narrow trail leads to the ocean and one of the most mysterious and uniquely photographed sites in all of Haida Gwaii: Balance Rock. Here, we stop and explore the area known to the Haida as a spiritual site. Enroute to Tlell we stop at the Jungle Beach and St Mary’s Spring where those who take a sip are destined to come back to Haida Gwaii. We check into our local B&B and enjoy dinner at the local restaurant.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 - Tlell : Tlell Stone Circle

Enjoy a quiet morning, take a walk on the beach, watch the sun rise. After a leisurely breakfast we head out to the village of Port Clements, and the protected lands of Yaaguun Gandlaay. Here we’ll visit the site of Kiidk’yaas, also known as the Golden Spruce. An easy hard packed hiking trail takes us to the banks of the Yakoun River where this mighty tree once stood. The Golden Spruce was a Sitka spruce tree that had a rare genetic mutation that caused its needles to be golden in colour. This tree was considered sacred by the Haida People.

On the trail you will learn about the tragic end of this tree and the efforts today to save and create a new Golden Spruce and visit the new Golden Spruce growing in Port Clements.

After lunch we head out to the Crystal Cabin, a small gift shop founded by the Dutheil family of jewelers 25 years ago. This shop is home to the Tlell Stone Circle, an outdoor exhibit of Haida Gwaii’s Geological Past. These stones, which are arranged in a medicine wheel, mark the intersection of two harmonic leylines and an entryway for light into the universe. We can stand in the middle of the circle to become more spiritually connected to Haida Gwaii.

Inside, guests can discover local and international selection of crystals, and gemstone jewelry. Be sure to pick up the Dutheil Family local signature specimens, including the Serenity Stone, Star Spirit Thunder Eggs, or Island Mist Agates.

At the end of the day, guests have the option to relax at their accommodation or follow a hiking hike to nearby Misty Meadows in Naikoon National Park. This trail leads to the Pesuta Shipwreck and takes three to four hours, there and back.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 - Masset, / Tow Hill B.C. : Naikoon Provincial Park

Everyone needs a chill day and today is it. After a relaxing morning we’ll check the tides and head out to explore Tow Hill and Naikoon Provincial Park. We’ll walk along the boardwalk trail up Tow Hill with panoramic views of the sandy beaches and Masset Inlet. Naikoon National Park encompasses 72,640 hectares along the Northeast tip of Graham Island with 97 kilometres of sandy beaches, making it a beachcomber’s delight. The park is mostly lowland forest with stunted lodge pole pine, red and yellow cedar, Sitka spruce and Western Helmlock.

After our visit to Tow Hill we’ll walk along North Beach and sink out toes into the soft sand and do some beachcombing. We take refreshment at a funky local bakery set in the forest. In the afternoon passengers can visit the Dixon Maritime Museum and Delkatla Nature Sanctuary.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast + Dinner

Day 6 - Masset, / Tow Hill B.C. : Artisans

Our last full day on our Haida Gwaii vacation is spent touring the village of Old Masset. We visit the local chiefs’ Big House and then are guided by a local through the canoe shed. For a first hand and personal understanding of the Haida People we visit local carvers of argelitte, cedar and painters in their homes.

We’ll tour the more recent poles put up in the village and enjoy lunch with the locals at their favourite eating place. Other stops will include Sarah’s Gift House and the Raven Gallery. We stop for pictures of the local sites whenever and wherever possible, watch the eagles ride the wind along the shoreline or enjoy the treats thrown out to them by local fishermen.

By the end of this week you will have slowed down and become tuned to the unique rhythm of this place, of the peace and quiet that is Haida Gwaii. Your spirit will be renewed and love of nature awakened.

Accommodation: One or two queen beds and private bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast + Dinner

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guests and guides are on tour?
Our small group trips of Haida Gwaii are limited to five guests plus one guide per departures. This is due to a number of reasons including our desire to tread lightly on this land and to unobtrusively visit quaint shops and local artisans.
What is the population of Haida Gwaii?
Around 4,500 people live on the islands with about 50% of the population being indigenous people (Haida). Most indigenous people live in two communities at Skidegate and Old Masset.
What does Haida Gwaii mean?
B.C.’s Queen Charlotte Islands were officially renamed Haida Gwaii in 2009 as part of a historic reconciliation agreement between BC and the Haida Nation. “Haida Gwaii” means “islands of the people” or “islands of the Haida” in the local language.
Which islands on Haida Gwaii do you visit?
We tour Graham and Moresby islands by van.
How long are the days?
The days generally begin after breakfast, about 8:30 to 9:00 am, and conclude about 5:00 pm, or after dinner (if dinner is included). While organized activities are included each day, there is time to strike out on your own.
What are the guide's qualifications?
David Hopper has a Masters in in Environmental Studies and has been guiding Midnight Sun’s trips to Haida Gwaii since 2012 (with the exceptions of the 2020 and 2021 COVID seasons). David has many connections on the islands and enjoys sharing these with our guests. He's forged a number of friendships, but has also learned about Haida Culture over the last 10 years. He brings his own educational background to help interpret Haida Gwaii's magnificent natural systems that exist at "the edge of the World". David has a Class 4 unrestricted driver license and a St. John First Aid and CPR certificate. He carries a first aid kit on all hikes.
Can certain dietary preferences be accommodated?
We’ve yet to meet a diet we can’t accommodate! Please make these known to us on your booking form. The restaurants we frequent are all flexible, but some require advance notice.
How do meals work?
We include six breakfasts, one lunch and four dinners all of which will be paid for in advance. Regarding other meals, David will advise available places to each in each location (sometimes there’s only one place). Guests have the option to dine together or in group.
How do I pack?
As you’ll fly commercial air (generally Air Canada) to Haida Gwaii, your luggage limitations are set. We do not provide portage services to and from our van, so please keep this in mind when you pack. We recommend you carry a daypack for your water bottle, camera, medication, binoculars and raingear. And, please dress using the “layer method” – waterproof / windproof jacket on top, with a fleece liner over your shirt. Running shoes or hiking boots should have good grip soles and don’t forget your hat!
How much is the single supplement?
$725 provides a private room and bathroom. It is more expensive than a double occupancy which enables the cost of a room to be split between two people sharing the same room.
Once I pay the deposit, what happens next?
*Once you pay the deposit, we'll email you a package containing: 1. A receipt for the deposit. This receipt will also state when the balance of payment is due. 2. Cancellation information. A few of these may have exposed roots. Tow Hill is the steepest of all trails and offers a fabulous view. This trail is considered a moderate hike that covers 2.4 km, with an elevation gain of 102 m and takes about one hour to complete.

Weather
The best months to visit Haida Gwaii are June to September for generally warmer weather, longer daylight, and better chances for marine excursions, with July and August being peak for warmth, while May offers fewer crowds, excellent birding, and vibrant wildlife, though be prepared for rain any time as it's a rainforest. September is great for salmon runs and fewer visitors, but expect more variable weather, making it ideal for wildlife enthusiasts seeking bears and eagles.

Outstanding!

Haida Gwaii, July 2025: Outstanding! All aspects of the tour were even better than expected. David, our guide, was knowledgeable, thoughtful, helpful, and obviously connected to the local community. We were a small group, which was wonderful, and made everything easier, for us at least. Accommodations were outstanding, and the food was top class. What a learning experience! I highly recommend Midnight Sun Travel for your trip to Haida Gwaii.

The Trip of a Lifetime on Haida Gwaii

July 2025 • Friends

I was prepared to fall in love with Haida Gwaii – but I was caught off-guard by our Tour Guide. He was fantastic: a true professional, with a deep knowledge of the culture and the geography of Haida Gwaii, and extremely patient, as all of us were Seniors.

He would put forward an ambitious schedule each morning at breakfast – which he willingly amended when requested by the group.

Amazing Haida Gwaii

Thank you to David, Vivian, Heather, and Jay for an enjoyable week on Haida Gwaii. David was an attentive and knowledgeable tour guide, sharing his vast knowledge about the flora and fauna, Haida culture, and geography of the islands. Viv was attending the tour for a second time, and Heather and Jay had long-held dreams of visiting the islands.

I was looking to learn more about the Haida culture and their territory as well as spend time in a place not affected by the summer heat and wildfire smoke of other parts of BC and North America. Highlights include – Haida Style boat trip to the village sites of Ḵ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans) and T’aanuu Llnagaay – walking in the forests and along beaches – Saahlinda Naay – the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate – meals at KEENAWAII’S KITCHEN (Roberta Olsen) in Skidegate, at the home of Trevor and Myrna in Old Massett, fish and chips in Daajing Giids – Jag’s Coffeeshop and Guest Rooms in Skidegate – visiting the carving sheds of 7idansuu Jim Hart and Kihlyaahda Christian White as well as the home of artist SGaana Jaad April White.

I usually travel to more urban places and create my own itinerary, but I found this small group van tour to be perfect for getting to know Haida Gwaii, with its small communities and wilderness areas. David and Midnight Sun Tours were able to take us places and offer experiences that we may have missed otherwise. We flew into Sandspit and out of Massett Airport. I was surprised that many shops and restaurants were open limited days and hours, despite it being the summer tourist season. I suggest that if you travel there, if you like something, you purchase it when you first see it because you may not see it in another shop. The days were generally a mix of sun and clouds, with just a few rain showers. I was happy in a t-shirt or light sweater most of the time, but other members of the group wore layers of clothing and jackets. Visitors to Haida Gwaii are asked to sign a pledge and respect Haida Ways of Being: 1. Yahguudang • Yahguudáng – Respect for all Beings 2. Ad kyaanang • Ahl kyáanang tláagang – Ask Permission First 3. Tll yahdah • Tll yahda – To Make it Right 4. Gina ‘waadluuxan gud ad kwaagid • Gin ‘wáadluwaan gud ahl kwáagiidang – Everything Depends on Everything Else Finally, thank you to the Haida people for allowing us to be guests on their unceded traditional territory. Haida Gwaii Tours for Seniors

I went on the Haida Gwaii tour to learn about the history and culture of Haida civilization…and that is exactly what I got out of it! I was very pleased that my cravings of curiosity were totally fulfilled with this trip. It is a very interesting experience, especially for those who want to take a trip to learn new things. Plus, a few of the Haida meals are now some of the most memorable and unique culinary experiences I’ve ever had!

One of the best trips we have ever taken

Our recent (July 2024) Midnight Sun Adventure Travel trip to Haida Gwaii was one of the best trips we have ever taken. Haida Gwaii is a unique cultural destination and the small group (5 people) tour offered visits to traditional ancient village sites and museums as well as boat trips and hiking to see both wildlife and coastal forests. Being able to travel in an SUV with a guide allows for flexible touring!

Our guide David Hopper kept us on schedule (without rushing us) despite changeable weather and the local weather conditions. David is sensitive to the local Haida culture and very familiar to unique opportunities and activities that an independent traveler would not be aware of. He knows the shops and artisans and he kept us busy seeing canoe building, carving, and other crafts plus interesting walks and beach combing. The food was wonderful – lots of fresh seafood plus the opportunity to try native foods. Some meals were included- some at our choice – which was a good mixture. Hearing about Haida culture from the local tribal people was an especially great treat. Highly recommend the tour company.

Amazing Experience

Hi Scott, I had an amazing experience, at every step.

The lodge hosts were very welcoming, accommodating and kind. I had a delicious supper my first night and enjoyed the uniqueness and warm atmosphere of the lodge. My breakfast was excellent, as well. Delicious egg dish and tasty bacon, too.

The excursion with Sea Wolf was incredible. I was fortunate to have a pretty diverse group of people on the tour.  Our guide and deckhand, Karissa and Tyler, were top notch. I would book that experience again. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed my time at your property. Warm atmosphere, kind people, tasty food and a great view. I’d stay at Alert Bay Lodge again. If the opportunity happens and will recommend it to colleagues and friends.

Hope the rest of summer treats you well.

The whale and bear watching were completely awesome

All the arrangements worked really well, the whale and bear watching were completely awesome (not a word I use often or lightly!). We loved Vancouver Island and Alert Bay, and we’d love to be back there again one day.

★★★★★

Fantastic Alert Bay adventure!

Fantastic Alert Bay adventure! Nina and Scott went out of their way to make our experience in Alert Bay special. We had a great trip up from Victoria with stops and stories along the way. Toured Alert Bay and learned a lot about the locals and the history of the area. Very special visits at the lodge from First Nation members who shared songs, lore and salmon preparation. A memorable experience!

★★★★★

I was very lucky with both whale and bear sightings

The whole trip went very well and I was very lucky with both whale and bear sightings. I would also like to mention Rich and Emma as they made my stay at the lodge excellent and were always available to help with any of my travel or trip arrangements.

★★★★★

Supremely well organised

The whole tour could not be faulted, supremely well organised from start to finish. They even organised the bears to come and see us as well as the whales. If anybody wants to reconnect with nature, quietness and learn some Culture then I can’t recommend this highly enough. I left the Island a different person and couldn’t fault one part of this trip. I want to thank everybody involved in this Adventure because you are all Bloody Brilliant!
